The United Nations (UN) has been accused of allowing Hamas to “literally get away with murder,” according to a leading international expert on human rights law.
John McArthur, director of the Global Center of Expertise on Human Rights Law, has accused the international organization of failing to hold the Islamist group accountable for its actions, including murder, torture, and other violations of human rights.
McArthur argues that the UN’s handling of the situation in Gaza has been “ineffective” and that the situation has “continued to deteriorate.”
He believes the UN must do more to protect civilians in Gaza, particularly those who are subject to Hamas’ authoritarian rule.
“The United Nations has so far failed to take action to adequately protect the civilian population in Gaza, including those facing Hamas’ authoritarian rule,” McArthur said.
He went on to note that the UN must not “turn a blind eye to the human rights abuses perpetrated by Hamas and its allies” and that “tolerance of such acts will only embolden Hamas and its allies to continue their reprehensible behavior.”
Clearly, the UN must take action against Hamas and other militant groups in Gaza that are acting outside the bounds of international law. Without strong action from the UN, the situation in Gaza is likely to remain dire for its citizens, as Hamas continues to use violence to control the population.
