The latest poll out of Michigan is good news for President Donald Trump and bad news for the Republican field of challengers looking to unseat him in the upcoming primary season.
According to a Monmouth University poll conducted from July 18th-20th, Trump is supported by a whopping 87% of Michigan Republican primary voters. That’s a massive lead given that his nearest competitor, former Massachusetts Governor Bill Weld, holds only 5%.
The rest of the GOP field remains far behind with former South Carolina Governor Mark Sanford at 2%, most other candidates at 1%, and 17% undecided.
The large disparity between Trump and his challengers is due to the fact that the President has retained his considerable personal popularity with Michigan Republicans. Trump won the state by a wide margin in 2016 and continues to have sky-high job approval ratings among Michigan’s Republican voters.
Moreover, Trump continues to maintain a strong presence in the state. He held a rally in Grand Rapids in March and has frequently visited Michigan since then, raising money and rallying supporters.
The President’s high levels of support among Michigan’s GOP serve as a reminder that barring a catastrophic shift in the political landscape, Trump will remain the Republican Party’s nominee in 2020.
Given that the Republican Party in Michigan overwhelmingly supports Trump, the outcome of the Michigan Republican primary on March 10th is virtually assured. The President will once again cruise to victory there, further reinforcing his daunting hold on the nomination.
