The race to replace Virginia District 10 Representative Jennifer Wexton, who is running for US Senate, has become crowded as three more candidates have announced their intentions to enter the race.
With communal demands for a new face, this election is drawing attention from both parties. The three new candidates, all Democrats, bring the total number of contenders to seven.
Dave Hanson of Leesburg is a retired Air Force Colonel who has been in government and the private sector. His priorities among others include better oversight of federal agency spending, stronger mental health care measures, improving local transportation systems and protecting the environment.
Ben Hixon is another candidate who recently announced his desire to run. Hixon is a professor at Northern Virginia Community College where he teaches American government and holds leadership roles. He has prioritized environmental protections, healthcare and education.
The final candidate is Clifford “Cliff” Keeney. Keeney previously ran for Congress in 2010 as a Libertarian. He proposes better protection of consumer rights and bringing new business to the District.
Each of the candidates has their own vision for the future of District 10, and the fight to claim the seat is likely to be a fierce one. Advocates of both parties will have to wait for Primary Day in June to see who is successful.
The 2016 election in northern Virginia reshaped the political landscape and Wexton’s departure could prove to be another crucial moment in district history. With such a large field of candidates, the democratic process will surely provide the best possible outcome for District 10 and its constituents.
